  1. By: Ryan Polite The U.S Invasion of Afghanistan

  2. Factors Leading to the Invasion • Osama Bin Laden bombed U.S embassies in Africa in 1998 causing U.S suspicion of the Taliban under Osama Bin Laden’s rule.

  3. What Pushed the U.S to Invade • September 11th, 2001 • 19 Muslims lead by Osama Bin Laden hijacked 4 planes and used them to kill thousands of innocent Americans. • The Taliban refused to give up Osama without proper evidence that he lead the attacks. (Tim Kelly)

  4. September 11th, 2001

  5. The U.S Invasion • After the invasion • Afghan people saw the invasion as a opportunity for reconstruction of Afghanistan. However the exact opposite happened. The Afghan citizens needed food, shelter and clothing, not democracy. • After the U.S invasion, more than 12,000 bombs have been dropped on Afghan soil hitting the Taliban and also civilians. • The invasion has caused 5.6 million deaths as of October 7th, 2011. (Dr. Gideon Polya)

  6. Pictures of the U.S Invasion

  7. Current Government • Democracy • Having a democratic Afghan nation was the plan going into Afghanistan, but still does not exist completely. Afghanistan is the lowest ranking country for political freedom. • The U.S recently just made Afghanistan sign an agreement to help create a stronger base for a democratic government. This will be in effect for the next 10 years. (U.S Relations)

  8. Effects On The Afghan Population • Non-violent deaths since the invasion include a total of 4.2 million deaths, 1 in 6 dying from deprivation. (tehrantimes) • 1.4 million deaths are related to violent actions such as bombings. • Infant death rates since the beginning of the war have hit over 2.9 million which is twice as many as the number of Jewish children killed in WWII by the Nazis.

  9. Effects On The Afghan Population • The annual under-5 infant death rate in occupied Afghanistan is currently 237,000 which 90% of is due to war imposed deprivation. • Life expectancy is only 47 years for males and 50 years for females.
