PROBLEM You have to write an essay about, for example, the „psycho-dynamic theory in history“ in a week. You want to use the www as a possible source for information. May be someone published some research exactly on this topic in the internet, may be some pages can give you hints where to find information. So, you start google, type „psycho-dynamic theory“ and „history“ and ... you get the following results: WHO? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? WHAT FOR? SOLUTION Don't get lost searching the web! Just type a date, sovereign name or any historical event and let the encyclopaedia to find articles for you. REFERENCES This work was implemented within the Information Retrieval course at the University of Joensuu in 2003. All scientific material is taken from the book Baeza-Yates R., Ribeiro-Neto B.: Modern Information Retrieval, Addison Wesley, 2000. Thanks to Erkki Sutinen, and Tuomo Kakkonen for their valuable advices and comments which can’t be overestimated. • ARISING PROBLEMS • How to retrieve the only relevant articles, not “garbage”? • How to decide what to add to the user query? • How to rank the documents retrieved? DETAILS At first, system takes the keyword given by user and add to it, using WordNet online application, so-called „synonyms“ or related notions. Then this refined query is placed to the Google search engine. Retrieved documents then ranked according to the vector model.
