  1. Protein Synthesis Short Unit – Section Quiz MONDAY!!!

  2. Steps to complete • Read section 4 and take notes in your notebook (star chart points) • Complete handout packet (star chart points) • Answer the end of section questions (star chart points) • Complete your A4 poster with a partner (you will be assigned a step) (12 project points) • Snork Genes (10 lab points) • Mutations practice (as a class) • Quiz (25 points)

  3. A4 poster - How do cells make proteins? Steps to include using pictures/diagrams/words/explanation/creativity/pop-ups: • Step 1: DNA is copied to mRNA(Where? How? ) • Step 2: mRNA travels to ribosome (where is ribosome?) • Step 3: ribosome moves along mRNA to “read it” • Step 4: tRNA attaches to mRNA using Genetic Code • Step 5: Amino acids dropped off by tRNA to create a polypeptide chain

  4. A4 poster rubric • Includes title that is large and easy to read (example title: STEP 2: mRNA travels to ribosome)(2 points) • Includes short explanation of what happens at this step (3 points) • Includes at least 1 diagram hand drawn (3 points) • Includes an element of creativity(2 points) • Includes at least 3 colors(2 points)

  5. What is a protein? One of the 4 major organic molecules that make up living organisms Made up of many amino acids (amino acid = monomer) MANY different functions: antibodies that fight disease enzymes that speed up chemical reactions Structural proteins (fingernails) Transport molecules across membranes

  6. RNA– the OTHER nucleic acid DIFFERENCES DNA/RNA TYPES OF RNA mRNA: copies DNA tRNA: carries amino acid rRNA: makes up ribosome • RNA is SINGLE stranded • RNA has the base URACIL, not thymine • RNA has a different sugar in its backbone called RIBOSE (not deoxyribose)

  7. Step 1: DNAmRNA Location:

  8. Step 2: mRNA travels to ribosome

  9. Step 3: ribosome moves along mRNA to “read” it

  10. Step 4: tRNA attaches to mRNA using Genetic Code

  11. Step 5 – amino acids dropped off to form polypeptide
