  34. Challengesan overview of the coming years • Demographic developments • Globalisation of education • Development towards the „entrepreneurial university“ • „Sandwich“ position of Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule)

  35. ChallengesConsequences of current demographic developments In 10 to 15 years schools will only be producing 70 percent of the number of current high school graduates • If only those applicants with traditional university entrance qualifications are selected, student numbers will fall from 5,800 to 2,800 • Need to address additional target groups – both nationally and internationally Falling numbers of applications will lead to ever fiercer competition between universities

  36. ChallengesConsequences of the globalisation of education Businesses demand that graduates should have an international focus • Command of the English language is taken for granted • Extensive international experience and intercultural competence • More international partnerships, exchange of entire cohorts Competition between universities is not confined to the local region or even to Germany • International students to be recruited • International visibility and an international profile become essential • Development of a distinctive profile primarily by means of Master‘s programmes The university must satisfy international quality standards • Optimisation of processes up to and including certification or system accreditation

  37. ChallengesConsequences of development towards the entrepreneurial university In future, financing will consist of basic funding by the state plus other performance-related funding, therefore the most important foreseeable criterion is: • attracting third-party funding – above all in research! The Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts will shift tasks and responsibilities over to the universities, but • as a rule this will be without a corresponding budget increase Excellence, but this • cannot be achieved through state funding alone and • competition for third-party funding is already fierce and will become more so

  38. ChallengesConsequences of the Sandwich Position of Universities of Applied Sciences Many employers now view graduates of Universities of Cooperative Education in the same way as they previously viewed graduates from Universities of Applied Sciences, typical characteristics of these students being: • They are able to perform well professionally immediately after recruitment, due to their practical experience and soft skills. This means: • Universities of Applied Sciences are no longer unique in producing graduates who are instantly employable! Traditional research-based universities occupy an almost impregnable position with respect to academic excellence in their degree programmes: • Research-oriented professors, lighter teaching loads, attraction of much more external funding… and above all: • The right to award doctorates! • This means that traditional universities have a distinct advantage over Universities of Applied Sciences when it comes to Master‘s programmes

  39. Responses to the challengesWhat we are doing Growth • New degree programmes are rounding off the University‘s attractive portfolio • New professors are bringing further expertise into the region • Additional study places are being created in Continuing and Executive Education • New research facilities are creating the knowledge needed for the future Research • Research centres: • Robert Bosch ZentrumfürLeistungselektronik • Herman Hollerith Zentrum • Reutlinger Energiezentrum • Process Analysis & Technology Management • InteraktiveMaterialien • Appointment of professors at higher grades
