  2. What is Earth Day? In America in 1970 was the first Earth Day rally. The movement gave a voice to all people realising the importance of environmental issues. On April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, motorways and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values. Forty-six years later, Earth Day continues to gather people together to lead with ground breaking ideas. Earth Day continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to action. Earth Day is more than just a single day — but is celebrated on April 22, 2016.
