  3. Thomas Jefferson • Got married on January 1st , 1772 to Martha Skelton • Had six children one boy five girls • Author of the Declaration of In Dependence • Author of Virginia Statute for Religions freedom • Father of university of Virginia

  4. Thomas Jefferson • Believed in God and the moral teachings of Jesus Christ and the Bible • At age 16 he entered College of William and Mary in Williamsburg • Studied mathematics, philosophy, and metaphysics • First occupation was a lawyer, involved with hundreds of cases between 1768 and 1773

  5. Thomas Jefferson • Studied law with George Wythe, a later signer of the Declaration of Independence • Attended a local school that was run by a Scottish minister named William Douglas • Studied Greek, Latin, and French

  11. The Louisiana Purchase • Jefferson signed a treaty with Napoleon Bonaparte that ceded a giant amount of land to the United States • Doubled the size of America • Giving the country access to a very important trade route of Mississippi and the port of new Orleans
