Great Plains Indian Tribes • The Mandans lived in the northern Great Plains in what is now North Dakota. • The Kiowas lived in the southern Great Plains. • The Kiowas were nomads that moved from place to place.   3. Homes • The Mandans lived in lodges built over shallow pits covered with sod. • Sod is grassy earth that has been cut into blocks. The grass and its roots hold the earth together. • Up to sixty families could live in one lodge. Food • The Plains Indians had a healthy diet. • They ate meat, (often buffalo), fish, corn, squash, fruits, and nuts. • The Mandan women braided the corn crop’s best ears into strings and hung them up to dry. • They stored the dried braids of corn in pits they had dug in the floor of their earth lodges.   5. The Mandans and the Kiowas used buffalo hide to make their clothing. • They also used buffalo fur, beads, buffalo fat, and feathers to decorate their clothing. • The Plains Indians wore tunics and leggings to keep warm in the winter. Clothing
