  1. Title 1 ProgramParent Orientation Parkland School District 2014-2015

Federal Funding • Title 1 funds are provided by the government and are utilized to provide extra educational services in reading to students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in the Parkland School District. • The amount of funding a school receives depends on the needs of the students. • The goal of the program is to strengthen the reading skills of children who qualify for the program. • The program generally operates October through May. The length and frequency of instruction may vary according to school building and student needs.

  3. Selection Process • Previous year’s data • LEAD 21 Data • STAR assessments • Teacher observation and recommendations

  4. Instruction in Reading • Not a separate program • Supports classroom instruction • Students do not miss core instruction • Varies depending on the needs of individual students • Focuses on the critical areas of effective reading…phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension

  5. Title 1 Assistants • Title 1 assistants are trained and supervised by the reading specialist. • Additional professional development is provided by the district throughout the school year. • Title 1 assistants communicate consistently with the classroom teacher and Reading Specialist • Title 1 Assistants DO NOT GIVE GRADES. They provide valuable feedback to classroom teachers and the Reading Specialist.

  6. Reporting Progress • Two reports are given to parents yearly. They are NOT evaluative. These reports outline all the skills your child has reviewed in Title 1. • Reports help parents understand what skills should be reinforced at home. • Intervention time and materials are adjusted according to individual students’ needs and progress. • Specific questions or concerns in regards to your child’s progress can be addressed by the classroom teacher or reading specialist during parent conference times or anytime throughout the year.
