Writing Captions • 2-4 Lines • 1st part: Shows what’s going on in the photo, including the names of all identifiable people. • 2nd part: adds info that may supplement the story, including quotations. Not this: Kids participate in the rake-a-thon This: Rakers Ben and Sam, freshmen, volunteer in the annual Rake-a-thon

  3. Selecting and Using the Best Photos • Should contain people • The people should be doing something NOT staring at the camera • The person in the photo should be “unusual”

  4. Working the Layout • Design layouts around the strongest photos.

  5. Cropping • -removing unnecessary elements from the photo by reproducing only a portion of it • 1st purpose: removing unnecessary elements from the photo helps draw attention to the center of visual interest. • 2nd purpose: Don’t force the photo to fit into the layout. For example a horizontal photo into a vertical spot.

  6. Preparing Photos for the Printer • Before a photograph can be printed, it must be made into a halftone. • halftone-is a picture converted into a series of black and white or color dots so that in can be printed in black in and still pick up the shades of gray. • While photos are being made into a halftone, it can be sized and cropped
