  2. Who we are The Royal Institute of British Architects champions better buildings, communities and the environment through architecture and our members. .

  3. Who we are Arts Inform devises, implements and evaluates work related learning projects in which artists and arts organisations work in partnership with schools to deliver aspects of the curriculum through the undertaking of a work-based task.

  4. Architects in Residence Architects in Residence is a practitioner partnership programme enabling architects and teachers to work together to develop built environment projects in schools. The programme aims to give Architects an opportunity to share their passion for Architecture and inspire young people.

  5. Making Maths Relevant and Engaging Architecture in the classroom All the projects use local architecture as a starting point. Learning through architecture is an exciting way of encouraging students’ natural curiosity, stimulating their creativity and inspiring them about future career possibilities.  

  6. Architects as role models Architects can make a positive impact by being inspiring role models for students. They can also encourage students to learn more about their local area and embed pride of place. Architects volunteer between 15 and 20 hours to work with teachers to develop architectural projects in the classroom. Their time spent with the school may vary depending on the size of the classroom project. Architects can contribute in many different ways from regular lessons to participate in extra-curricular activities such as after school clubs. .

  7. Maths through Architecture Maths through Architecture is a curriculum focus development of the Architects in Residence programme. It aims to support the delivery of mathematics in the classroom, using design as a vehicle for this learning.   Maths through Architecture enables school students to apply mathematical knowledge in real life architectural scenarios, guided by an architect.

  10. Making Maths Relevant and Engaging Architecture in the classroom It provides a perfect vehicle for cross curricular learning in maths, history, geography and the arts. Using architecture for a school based project offers students an opportunity to develop skills in: • Communication • Working with others • Creative thinking • Problem solving • Applying their knowledge of mathematics • Information technology

  12. Maths Through Architecture: Case Study 1 Project: Welcoming Temporary Meeting Place’ for Potters Fields Park in Southwark School: Tower Bridge Primary, London Architects: Pauline Stockmans Practice: Allies and Morrison Duration: 10 sessions of 2 hours each

  13. Maths Through Architecture: Case Study 1 Learning Outcome: scale, ratio, the golden ratio, working to a brief, model making and working in teams. In the classroom: Working in teams of up to five, students used rods made from tightly rolled sheets of newspaper, together with cable-ties to connect them, to make a full scale structure at Potters Field Park.

  14. Maths Through Architecture: Case Study 2 Project:Welcoming Entrance Space to their New School School: Chelsea Academy , London Architects: Josephine Glyn Practice: Hawkins\Brown Duration: Six Friday afternoons, in sessions each lasting 2 hours

  15. Maths Through Architecture: Case Study 2 Learning outcomes: scale and ratio, as well more complex mathematics such as calculus, geometry, the Fibonacci sequence and parabolas. The results: included a building the shape of an upside down triangle resting on its point yet balanced with remarkable light buttresses, and a reverse-parabaloid building reminiscent of the ground-breaking architecture of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.

Using a geodesic dome as basis of your design, create a model to show how it can either form a • Tall structure • Strong structure • Light structure
