  1. Mettle • Disposition or temperament; basic character • Jack proved his mettle as he battled pirates, deathless creatures, and other non-existing creatures

  2. Infirmity • Bodily weakness • Elizabeth’s infirmities caused her to miss three days of school, resulting in Jack having to ward off pirates, deathless creatures, and those other non-existing people.

  3. Tempest • A violent windstorm, often with rain, snow, or hail. • The tempest caused the pirates to delay their fight with Jack.

  4. Surly • In a proud, commanding way; rude and hostile. • The surly pirate still has fight left in his scales.

  5. Portentous • Foreboding, full of unspecified meaning. • The portentous defeat

  6. Augmented • Made greater; larger. • Jack’s augmented sense of bravery allowed him to stand up and fight the set of pirates.

  7. Conspiracy • A group plotting a harmful act. • A few upset pirates made a conspiracy against Jack.

  8. Exploit • Act or deed, especially a heroic achievement. • Jack’s exploits caused him to be recognized by the most famous of imaginary people.

  9. Imminent • About to happen • After completely forgetting about our vocab quiz, my studying became imminent.

  10. Emulation • Old word for envy or Jealousy • Jack’s emulation exceed that of all others.

  11. Spurn • To “kick” disdainfully • Jack spurned the offer from Harvard in order to go to Pirate School.

  12. Confounded • Confused • Jack’s teacher was confounded by the “fact” that he missed so much school to fight pirates.

  13. Mutiny • Open rebellion against authority • The mutiny on the ship made Captain Barbosa the man in authority and Jack stranded on an island.

  14. Malice • A desire to see harm done to others • Barbosa’s malice was palpable to everyone on the ship

  15. Oration • Formal speech, especially one given at a state occasion. • No one heard Jack’s oration as he was stranded on that island by himself.

  16. Discourse • To speak formally and at length • Barbosa’s discourse to his pirates caused a lot of “Yarrrrrrrrrs,” and other pirate sounds of approval.

  17. Legacy • Money, property, or position left in a will to someone • Jack formerly had The Black Pearl and a mountain of gold to leave in his legacy before he was ousted.

  18. Slanderous • Damaging to a person’s reputation • Barbosa’s slander caused the people to hate Jack.

  19. Envy • Feeling of desire for another’s possessions or qualities and jealousy for not having them. • Jack’s envy for Barbosa caused him to regain the ship

  20. Chastisement • Punishment; severe criticism. • Expect to be chastised if you forget about the vocab quiz
