  2. Funding Bodies • Competitive proposals • State agencies • Federal agencies • NSF, Sea Grant, North Pacific Research Board • Vary in specificity • Foundations • Gordon & Betty Moore • Sometimes very specific, but less competition • Foundation goals are often negotiable • Contracts • E.g. International Pacific Halibut Commission • Usually very applied - want deliverables • Fellowships • Usually need additional funds

  3. The Basic/Applied Continuum Applied Basic NSF NIH Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Funds (PCSRF), BPA North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) Pacific Salmon Commission Sea Grant, EVOS Saltonstal-Kennedy Foundation and Endowment Funding

  4. Graduate Student and Research Funding at SAFS: Sources?? • How much does it cost? • Don’t forget 25-54% overhead

  5. Graduate Student and Research Funding at SAFS: Sources?? • Where does your funding come from?

  6. Graduate Student and Research Funding at SAFS: Sources?? • Fundamental • Endowments • Foundation • Applied

  7. Washington Sea Grant is a part of a national network, funded and coordinated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through a state-federal partnership.  Under the national program, the primary funding mechanism for Washington Sea Grant is an omnibus grant that integrates research, education, public engagement and administrative activities.

  8. Endowments UW Recognition Award "I owe somebody something for all the pleasure I've had from the outdoors. I want to make sure there are fish for tomorrow,"

  9. Foundation • Identify themes • Scout prospects • Focused RFP • Peer reviewed by selected experts http://www.moore.org/salmon.aspx

  10. Wild Salmon Ecosystem Projects at SAFS • Biocomplexity • Biodiversity/Genetics • Fisheries Management • Long-term changes in sockeye salmon http://www.moore.org/salmon.aspx

  25. Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council • History • Mission A State and Federal Partnership The Trustee Council was formed to oversee restoration of the injured ecosystem through the use of the $900 million civil settlement. The Council consists of three state and three federal trustees (or their designees). The Council is advised by members of the public and by members of the scientific community
