  1. Gimnazija Slovenj GradecCultural Evenings Operacijo delno financira Evropska unija iz Evropskega socialnega sklada ter Ministrstvo za šolstvo in šport. Operacija se izvaja v okviru Operativnega programa razvoja človeških virov v obdobju 2007-2013, razvojne prioritete: Razvoj človeških virov in vseživljenjsko učenje; prednostne usmeritve: Izboljšanje kakovosti in učinkovitosti sistemov izobraževanja in usposabljanja.

  2. Burns Night (Scottish Cultural Evening) • About 100 students involved. • Aim: To learn and present Scottish culture in a fun, interactive way • Cross curricular teaching with Slovene, SVS, KIC, English and Sport • Performed to European Classes, parents, teachers and members of the public.

  3. Preparation: 1st Year English • Students made posters on a variety of Scottish themes including famous people, sport, food and politics

  4. Preparation: 2nd Year SVS • Divided into groups: • Promotion: Designed flyers, posters and the evening programme. Welcomed guests • Charity: Organised a raffle and a cake sale to raise money for UNICEF (150 Euros) • Background Design: Made a PowerPoint presentation to compliment the performance and a compilation of Scottish pictures and music for the beginning and end of the performance • Performers: The musically talented among the group performed Scottish music (Amazing Grace, Chasing Cars)

  5. Preparation: 3rd Year KIC • Dancing: Learned two Scottish dances which they performed on the evening • Performers: The musically talented among the group performed songs by Rod Stewart • Reporter: One student was in charge of photography and writing a review of the evening in English and Slovene

  6. Preparation: 4th Year (English and free time) • The hosts: Two students hosted the evening • Our very own Rabbie Burns • Technical team • Scenery design • Preparation of Scottish gifts (donated by the Scottish Government) • Acting: One group learned and performed a sketch from Trainspotting

  7. Cross-cultural learning • Comparison of the life and works of Burns and Prešeren (English/Slovene) • Scottish culture lessons during English class: e.g stereotypes, famous people, accent, Trainspotting, attitudes to charity • Scottish Country Dancing (KIC/P.E) • Rugby (English/P.E) • Music (Choir) • Whole school involvement - Question Time

  8. Deutscher Kulturabend(German Cultural Evening) Kulturabend Kulturni večer Aims to present different content from German classes, SVS, translation exercices etc. to give motivated students the opportunity to present their German knowledge

  9. Programme Choir: performed “Ode an die Freude” 3rd year German class: presented the Austrian pop song “Funaki” 2nd year SVS class: planned and presented a theatre play of the history of Slovenj Gradec

  10. Programme Voluntary students: presented, danced a waltz, solo singing, recited their own translations, designed the invitation and programme 1st year German class: prepared Austrian specialities like Apfelstrudel, Kürbiskernaufstrich and Sacher Torte

  11. Theatre Play“The Legend of Slovenj Gradec” • 2nd year SVS class • Development in the working process • All works from A to Z • writing text • choreography • scene design • background music • playing roles

  12. Subjects Involved German in different years and levels Slovenija v svetu Translation exercises Music, Choir Art class for scene design Informatics for technical support, programme design etc.

  13. Conclusion • Students enjoy participating in cultural evenings • They improve language skills without even realizing it. • They are given the opportunity to develop other skills such as leadership, organization, team work etc. • There are lots of opportunities for cross-cultural learning • It’s a lot of work but it’s worth it!
