    2. The path of progress was also made possible by heroines such as Margaret Box, eldest daughter of the Box family. She showed great spunk, courage, and determination as few survived Indian attacks and kidnappings at this point in history. The following is an account of the Box family’s story. There are many interesting points, however I was intrigued by this young woman, who was about my age. “ The path of progress was made possible by the heroic men like Bonham, Travis, Crockett, Bowie, and the others. The history of Montague County is part of that progress. The county had its pioneers who were heroes in their own rights.” -- “History of Montague County, Texas” by Mrs. W.R. Potter rr

    3. James Jackson Box married Mary Matthews in 1842 in Titus County, Texas. The couple moved to Hopkins County, Texas and lived there until 1861. This is where their first three children were born. “About the breaking out of the late rebellion, we moved to Montague County on the extreme frontier, the cause of our moving was owing to my husband being a Union man and did not wish to fight in the rebellion...” -- Mrs. Mary Box in her account of the tragedy Mr. and Mrs. Box were expecting their fourth child when they set out on their fateful trip.
