  2. What do youth workers do? • Engage with young people on their terms/territory • Create trusting relationships • Develop learning programmes based on young people's own reality, interests and concerns • Act as broker • Supports voice and influence • Work in partnership • Celebrate achievement

  3. Range and context • Universal and targeted • IYSS, TYS • LA and third sector/community organisations • Schools, centres and streets

Contribution to the Health Agenda Getting health messages to young people - mass reach • 500,000 Guides and Brownies • 30,000 young people on Positive Futures • Young people have a million contacts with youth workers each month (NYA stats and DoH Nov 2007) • Support to delivery of mainstream PHSE • Support young people’s engagement in service shaping

  5. Contribution to the health agenda Reaches the young people the rest of the system fails, or those who are marginalised • Targeted programmes with young people with specific issues e.g. drug users • Key role in advice and counselling • Targeted Preventative Programmes - on sex and relationships - linked to teenage pregnancy indicators

  6. Partnership working • Bridging tier 1 and 2 - the windscreen wiper • Youth Information and Advice Services as part of CAHMS offer • Partnerships with young people • Integrated working across localities/schools

  7. The challenges • Recognising that Every Child Matters is a package • Developing shared understanding • Making IYSS/TYS work • Joint commissioning • Making voice and influence a reality
