  7. Need to Be Prepared • Need to survive for seven days or more before relief from government • federal, state, local • No one's prepared until everyone's prepared • homeowners, renters • students, families, seniors • Prepare for multiple locations • -home, work, commute/car, other locations

  8. Get Ready Now! 1. Fix Hazards in Home (p.20*) 2. Create Disaster Plan (p.22*) 3. Prepare Disaster Kit (p.23*) 4. EQ Retrofit Home/Building (p.24*) 5. Help Create Block / Neighborhood Plan * See USGS Booklet “Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country”

Fix Hazards in Home (p. 20) • Secure hanging objects • “soft” objects only in key locations • closed hooks in other locations • Secure and lower objects on shelves • putty, wax, gel • Secure high furniture, appliances, & electronics • straps, fasteners, brackets • Strap water heater • Latches on cabinets in kitchen • Secure gas and water pipes

Create Disaster Plan (p.22) • Plan 2 evacuation routes out of & from home • Plan 3 places to meet: home, nearby, far away • Plan who to call outside area • Identify safe spots in home • Keep shoes and flashlight near bed • Practice “drop, cover, hold” • Locate utility valves and have wrench ready • Train to use whistle or three knocks if trapped • If kids, find out school emergency plans • Take training: CPR, First Aid, CERT classes

Prepare Disaster Kit (p. 23) • Water: 1 gallon per person/day for 7 days • refill every year, 4 drops bleach per gallon • Food: For 7 days • freeze dried keeps up to 20 years • Supplies: • First aid kit, flashlight(s), light sticks, candles, lantern, whistle, radio, gloves, crowbar, trash bags, tarp/tent, clothes, shoes, blankets, stove, utensils, snack bars, can opener, toilet paper, corded phone • Personal Items: • copies of vital documents, medications, phone lists, eyeglasses, personal hygiene, cash See WNA Water and Food Supply List

  12. 4. Retrofit Home/Building (p. 24) • Bolt foundation • Install plywood sheer panels in crawl space • Brackets & wall plates • Replace or brace brick chimney • Replace or cap brick foundation • Seismic wall upgrade with renovations • Seismic upgrade of “soft story” buildings

Start Block Group • Organize your block meeting • At meeting educate & indentify block committee • Committee meet(s) to develop plan • Team leaders by function, command center location, • extra supplies, special skills, etc. • Canvas (& recanvas!) block • Educate regarding risk • Encourage to order disaster supplies • Fill out neighbor information sheet • Take Berkeley CERT classes • Block party / earthquake practice • Meet yearly to expand, refine, and update plan

WNA Block Starter Kit • Sample meeting flyer • PowerPoint slides & video • USGS earthquake preparedness booklets • Get prepared / what to do flyer • Disaster kit order sheet • Recommended online suppliers • Neighbor information sheet • residents, contact info, schools, pets, medical info, valve locations, skills, resources, etc.

Support Block Plan • Provide Information Sheet to Block Captain(s) • residents, contact info, schools, pets, medical info, valve locations, skills, resources • Identify elderly or disabled neighbors • Identify block command center location • Indentify disaster team leaders • Buy and store extra supplies • Take Berkeley CERT classes: first aid, search and rescue, fire suppression • Join block committee • Join neighborhood committee

  16. When it happens... 1. Protect yourself during an earthquake 2. Check for injuries and damage 3. Put up “OK” sign in window (if applicable) 3. When safe continue with family plan 4. Assist neighbors / block / neighborhood 5. Proceed with Block Plan
