  1. Parts of the Eukaryotic Cell

  2. Cell Membrane

  3. Selectively Permeable = only certain things can enter / exit the cell

  4. Made primarily of lipids and proteins

  5. Integral proteins form channels or pores which certain substances can pass

  6. Fluid mosaic model = cell membrane acts more like a fluid than a solid (flexible); made up of a variety of parts

  7. Cell Membrane

  8. Cytoplasm Contains the organelles of the cell

  9. Contains cytosol = a gelatin-like aqueous fluid which organelles are in

  10. Cytoplasm

  11. Nucleus Stores the hereditary information in its DNA; controls the cell

  12. Nucleus Nucleus

  13. Nuclear Membrane Double membrane that surrounds the nucleus, has nuclear pores

  14. Nuclear Pores

  15. Nucleolus Site where ribosomes are made

  16. Nucleus/Nuclear Membrane/Nucleolus

  17. Ribosomes Most numerous organelle; synthesize proteins

  18. Ribosomes

  19. Mitochondria Sites of chemical reactions – supply energy to cell

  20. More numerous in cells with high energy requirements

  21. Cristae= folds that increase surface area (more sites for chemical reactions)

  22. Mitochondria

  23. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) A system of membranous tubules and sacs

  24. Functions as a highway along which molecules move from one part of the cell to another

  25. Two types: • Rough ER (has ribosomes) 2) Smooth ER (no ribosomes)

  26. Rough ER

  27. Smooth ER

  28. Rough and Smooth ER

  29. Golgi Apparatus The processing, packaging, and secreting organelle of the cell

  30. Golgi Apparatus

  31. Lysosomes Organelles that contain enzymes that digest stuff

  32. Common in cells of animals, fungi, and protists, but rare in plant cells

  33. Lysosomes

  34. Microtubules Contributes to the support, movement, and division of the cell

  35. Microtubules

  36. Flagella Whipping action propels cells and makes them move

  37. Flagella

  38. Cell Wall Rigidity helps support and protect the plant cell

  39. Cell Wall

  40. Plant Cells with Cell Wall

  41. Vacuole Fluid filled organelle that stores enzymes, metabolic wastes, and water

  42. Vacuole

  43. May occupy 90% of the volume of a plant cell (central vacuole)

  44. Vacuole (in a plant cell)

  45. Chloroplast used to trap energy of sunlight during photosynthesis with chlorophyll and convert to energy

  46. has a system of flattened membranous sacs called thylakoids

  47. Chloroplast
