  21. The Process for Redeeming Your Education Award

  22. THE EDUCATION AWARD

  23. Full time fellows may receive up to a maximum of $5,350 upon successful completion of a term of service (1,700 hours minimum). Successful completion includes: Attendance at pedagogical seminars (with the exception of one unexcused absence), completion of a Service Learning Project, and timely submittal of all required documentation. Education awards can be used to repay qualified existing or future student loans, pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education, or pay expenses incurred while participating in an approved school-to-work program. Explanation of the Education Award

  24. Using Your Education Award • Because the Education Awards come in the form of a voucher and can only be redeemed at qualified institutions, students who are interested in using the award to pay for tuition during their year of service should take out a student loan for that academic year and repay that loan after receiving the Education Award voucher. AmeriCorps will not pay individual out-of-pocket expenses even though those expenses may be legitimate education expenses.

  25. Using Your Education Award • Education awards must be used within seven years of the date of completion of service. • Education awards are subject to income taxes in the year they are used. • Education awards are non-transferable. • Fellows with existing student loans can put their loans in forbearance by completing and submitting the appropriate forms. AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that accrues during the term of service, above and beyond the Education Award.

  26. INTEREST ACCURAL • All federally-backed student loans will be eligible to receive the interest accrual payment through AmeriCorps. This benefit applies to loans either in deferment or forbearance. You must request the interest accrual payment through the My AmeriCorps Portal.

  27. Withdrawal From the Program • If for some reason, you are unable to complete your service through TEAMS/AmeriCorps, you must contact us in writing, and must have a compelling reason. • Examples of compelling reasons would be: personal/family illness, death of a family member, loss of placement. If you do not contact our office and are exited without an award with no compelling reason, you will forfeit any opportunity to participate in any future AmeriCorps programs. • Compelling reasons must be in writing, first discussed with the TEAMS Office.

  28. Thank you very much for your time and attention today!
