  2. 14-16 Activity- History • Substantive programmes introduced in 2001 – year prior to IFF • Initial partnership formed between college and 6 local schools • Reasons – raise profile of college with local schools, contribute to widening participation & progression onto college programmes

  3. The Reaseheath Schools Partnership • 20schools involved • Level 1 courses in 7 programme areas: the Vocational Opportunities Programme (VOP) - about 100 each cohort • GCSE’s in Vocational Subjects (GCSE’s) in Engineering & Manufacturing – about 110 each cohort • 2006/07 Young Apprenticeship – Manufacturing ( food & drink)

VOP Programme • All practical activity – mainly use instructors • 1 day a week over 2 years of Year 10 & 11 • Mainly (but not always) the disengaged at school • NPTC Level 1 Cert in Land-based Studies • Charge schools £380 per learner per year + schools sort out transport • Concentrated day + Pre 16 learner manager + any problems go back to school

  5. VOP Learner Views • “better than being stuck in a classroom” • “learning something related to a job” • “doing rather than watching” • “more relaxed & treated like young adults” • “you’re always doing stuff” • “painting fences was ace” • “like getting messy” • “always look forward to Tuesday”

  6. GCSE Engineering & Manufacturing • 110 learners from 3 schools • Half-day a week attendance in year10 • Students acquire practical skills – most of curriculum covered in schools • College has encouraged GCSE activity – better mix of abilities in cohort

  7. Strengths • Profile of Reaseheath raised in schools with both students and staff. Good links with head teachers & others • Well received by LLSC & others – well placed for further opportunities • Activity has blended in well into college & very few problems with learners

  8. Challenges • Capacity – cannot meet demand especially in construction/engineering • Future funding – 2007/08 no IFF – not sure what schools will be prepared to pay for provision? • Consider curriculum offered: a “general” VOP course rather than subject specific / opportunities to deliver “bits” of the specialist diplomas for schools from 14-19.
