  1. YEAR NINE PSD DRUGS

  2. What are drugs? • Working in pairs, make a list of all the different drugs you can think of? • What do they all have in common? • What are drugs? Write down your own definition.

  3. A drug is… …any substance which causes a change in the way the body, or part of the body, works.

  4. Look at the pictures below, and put into categories.

  5. When is it okay to use drugs? • Working in pairs, write down when it is okay to use drugs?

  6. CAFFEINE Some drugs are harmless when consumed in moderation: Coffee, tea, cola and chocolate all contain CAFFEINE. This is a mild stimulant which can make us feel more awake, but, if we take in too much, it can make us irritable and give us headaches.

  7. PRESCRIBED DRUGS If a doctor prescribes a medicine when you are ill. Always take the doctor’s advice about how much to take and how often to take it. Overdosing (taking more than the recommended dose) can make you ill.

  8. SUBSTANCE ABUSE When people take drugs which they don’t really need (i.e. not for medical reasons) this is substance abuse. People who do this often become ADDICTED to these drugs.

  9. ADDICTION This is when drug-taking becomes a habit which is hard to break. An addicted person feels as if they need drugs and may feel sick if they don’t take them as the body has become physically addicted. Once a person becomes addicted to a drug it is very hard to stop taking it. They feel dependent on it and often find it hard to concentrate on anything but getting their next ‘fix’.

  10. Why do people take drugs? • Working in pairs, list the reasons why people take drugs.

  11. What are the effects of drugs? • Working individually, draw a body outline. What do you think are the effects of drugs? Write down using the body outline to help.

  12. What else…… • What else happens if you abuse drugs? Working individually, think of how drugs affect life?
