  1. Balancing Chemical Equations

  2. Chemical Equation • Uses Chemical symbols and formulas as a shortcut to describe a chemical reaction. • carbon dioxide + water ==> glucose + oxygen • 6CO2 + 6H2O ==> C6H12O6 + 6O2

  3. Photosynthesis

  4. Chemical Equation • Reactants: starting materials (CO2 and H20) • Products: substances formed (C6H12O6 and O2) • carbon dioxide + water ==> glucose + oxygen • 6CO2 + 6H2O ==> C6H12O6 + 6O2

  5. Chemical Equation • Must be balanced (Reactants=products) • 6CO2 + 6H2O ==> C6H12O6 + 6O2 • Carbon Atoms: 6 • Oxygen Atoms: 18 • Hydrogen Atoms: 12 • So this must be balanced Gang!

  6. Mr. Osen, Are they always balanced? • No! That is your job! • Coefficient: number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula. Don’t forget about your Law of Conservation of Energy!

  7. Lets practice! • Poor Gummi! • SnO2 + H2 →Sn + H2O

  8. Lets try another one! • Mentos/Coke • Al+ O2Al2O3

  9. I’ll have another please… • Foam Reaction • Don’t forget young Jedi, you can always check your answers!
