What is a simile? • It compares one thing to another, often using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’. • For example: The goalkeeper is likea rock What is a metaphor? • It compares one thing to another, stating that one thing is something else. • For example: My baby brother is a little monkey
The Snowby Mrs Patel (aged 13) The snow does lie on the cold, hard ground. The air as clear and cool as a peppermint. All around, the trees and buildings are dusted with soft snow. The snow is dry and fine, like caster sugar which glints in the bright sunshine, and fresh footsteps lie crisp in the otherwise untouched snow.
‘Paint a picture’ for the reader: • Task: Use imagery to add precision and detail to your description • Create a group poem about snow using similes and metaphors • For example: Snow is like a sprinkling of caster sugar (simile), snow is a blanket (metaphor)
