How are these categories defined? In terms of damage potential, how much stronger is each category of storm than storms in the category below it? What is meant by “maximum sustained surface wind speed”? Aside from direct effects of wind on structures, what other, features or consequences of hurricanes cause damage? Broadly speaking, where do these other types of damage tend to occur the most?
