  1. M10MAE Computer Aided Engineering Shell Meshing Example Using Hypermesh

  2. Introduction • The aim of this tutorial is to present the features necessary to generate an adequate crash mesh • Start HyperMesh using the Optistruct template • Input the Iges file longit.igs • File>import>geometry>iges • Use filter to recognise surface features (+ toggle fixed points)

  3. Step 1 – Import Geometry & Initial Inspection

  4. Step 2 – Auto Clean up function & Parameter File Geometry>Auto Cleanup

  5. Step 2 – Auto Clean up function & Parameter File

  6. Step 3 – Manual Geometry Clean Up General Quick Geometry Edit (F11)

  7. Step 3 – Manual Geometry Clean Up General • A point will force the mesh to lock on it, which can distort the mesh • Removing points give better control • Use the Point Edit menu> Multipoints > Delete to delete all the redundant points on the surface

  8. Step 3 – Manual Geometry Clean Up Panels Geometry Clean Up Panels

  9. Step 3 – Manual Geometry Clean Up Panels Geometry Clean Up Panels F11 short-cut RMB separates LMB fuses MMB leave

  10. Step 4 – Auto Mesh & Criteria File • Use AutoMesh (F12) and select the square icon as mesh type (will generate fewer triangles) • Select QI Optimised, which uses the parameters in the Criteria file • Compare with Standard Bias: what is the difference in mesh quality? (F10)

  11. Step 4 – Auto Mesh & Criteria File

  12. Time Step Calculations Mesh Requirements Step 4 – Auto Mesh & Criteria File

  13. Step 5 – Revision of Mesh Quality – Quality Index Uses the Criteria file 2D> Quality Index

  14. Step 6 – Edges & Normals Panels. Tools Panel

  15. Step 7 – Element Manipulation Quality Index Delete (F2) Combine (F6) Replace (F3) Project (Shift+F4) Split (F6) Distance (F4) Align (F7)

  16. Step 8 – Final Mesh Element Clean Up Panel Bypasses the Criteria file
