  2. George’s Life • Was born February 22, 1732 • Was born in Westmoreland, Virginia • Religion: Episcopalian • Married Martha Washington in 1759 • He was born to a wealthy family with a tobacco plantation, and slaves.

Revolutionary War • George Washington was an important early American military leader in the Revolutionary War and later served as the first President of the United States of America. • George Washington was appointed as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia

  4. Loyalist or Patriot? • George Washington was a patriot. We know this because he often expressed his displeasure with the British government(parliament) and king • Also for the more obvious reason, that he was the commander-in-chief of the Patriot army

  5. Did he survive • Yes, George Washington survived the war to become America’s first president.

  7. FUN FACTS • Was the only president to never belong to a political party • Was offered a crown to be king but declined • Known as “The American Cincinnatus” • Was the only U.S. president to fire his slaves • Accounts from relatives state that he was quite the ladies man in his heyday

  8. FUN FACTS • As a farmer, Washington grew marijuana on his farm and promoted it's growth • Washington's 2nd inaugural address was the shortest ever delivered - 135 words • Washington started loosing his teeth in his 20’s, by age 57he had only one real tooth left the rest were false

HIS IMPACT • George Washington's greatest effect on the world was when he resigned his commission at the end of the war rather than capitalizing on his popularity to gain political power, even though many were calling for him to be crowned King of America. • King George of England had this to say when he heard that Washington had resigned. • "He is either the greatest man in the world or a complete fool!" • This is how George Washington gave the US and the world its greatest gift. • The gift of self determination! • I would ask Washington how to inspire more people to be like him today.
