  2. Psychological Profiling Involves investigating the offender’s Behavior Motives Background As a guide for what direction the Investigation needs to go.

  3. Psychological Profiling Used to analyze the criminal's habits and rituals. Investigators can link similarities between previous crimes.

  4. Psychological Profiling When public assistance is needed for the investigation • Details may be released to the public • Others may recognized some or all of the: profile characteristics • Friends • Neighbors • Co-workers • Family 

  5. Psychological Profiling Inductive Profiling • When a criminal commits a crime • The background and motive will be similar to others who have committed a similar crime. • Used to draw conclusion • A particular crime or criminal • Based on other crimes and criminals with similar elements.

Psychological Profiling Deductive Profiling • Tries to avoid generalizations • Suspects are analyzed in great detail • Modify findings in which new evidence surfaces. • Profile is established using the offender's actions • before, during and after committing the crime. • Also known as behavioral evidence analysis • Pieces the evidence together • Investigators can reconstruct the behavior of the offender • Evidence can be analyzed to classify the criminal

  7. Offender Profiling Offender profiling has four phases Antecedent Method and manner Body disposal Post-offense behavior

  8. Antecedent What plan did the offender have in place before the act? What triggered the murderer to act some days and not others?

  9. Method and manner What type of victim(s) did the murderer select? What was the method and manner of murder? Shooting Stabbing Strangulation Other

  10. Body Disposal Did the crime and body disposal take place all at one scene? Multiple scenes?

  11. Post-Offense Behavior Is the murderer trying to inject himself into the investigation? By: • Reacting to media reports • Contacting investigators
