Goal Setting

On your sticky note write your academic goal about one thing you want to learn during this lesson about the motivation of the Klu Klux Klan.

Background Information

  • That is exactly what the Klan did to African Americans.

  • The Klu Klux Klan’s main goal was to keep blacks from pursuing the rights they had gained after the Civil War.

  • Review:

    What rights did the African Americans gain through Reconstruction?


Primary Source

  • Remember, primary sources are from the actual time period and secondary sources are written after the time period.

  • When we are looking at sources sometimes we have to infer, (background knowledge + clues from the source), to find the meaning.

  • Let’s look at a primary source to infer information about the Klu Klux Klan.

  • The Klu Klux Klan was motivated to keep African Americans from exercising their newly gained rights.

  • They wanted to protect “white supremacy” and thought the African Americans would threaten their race.

  • They also wanted to protect the women and children from the African American militia.
