Session 3 Objectives: • All pupils will recognise the impact of flooding on species of plants and animals in flood hit areas. • Most pupils will be able to give specific examples of the loss of biodiversity due to flooding between the UK and Pakistan. • Some pupils will be able to explain why there are differences in the prevention and recognition of the loss of biodiversity due to flooding in different parts of the world.

  4. Flooding in the news • READ the newspaper article. • The read it again and highlight the effects on: • Wildlife and plants • THEN compare the article about Cockermouth to the one on Pakistan. • Are there many differences? • If so what are they? Why?

Biodiversity • Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals living in an ecosystem. • The greater the biodiversity, the healthier the ecosystem! • BUT how do YOU think flooding affects this? • TASK: Produce a news report on the types of plants and animals affected by flooding in a particular area. Use books and internet to research your topic and present it in a lively/attention-grabbing way! • Choose ONE of these topics to research: • Sugar cane and cotton in Pakistan • Buffalo and cows in Pakistan • Cows and sheep in Cockermouth • Wheat and Corn in Cockermouth Remember! It needs to be catchy and hard-hitting to make people listen!
