Minimizes negative environmental effects through the use of environmentally friendly products and practices • Is a way of adding environmental considerations to the price and performance criteria that businesses use to make purchasing decisions • Attempts to identify and reduce environmental impact as well as maximize resource efficiency. We believe that we can do this by integrating ecologically sound and responsible criteria into traditional global supply chains and business paradigms, models, processes and practices, and through applied research for greening the supply change via sustainable development.   8. The concept of Green Purchasing attracts many people from varied backgrounds and sectors of society. From the farmer in South America, to the factory worker in China, to the R&D and production managers in America, to the average consumer in every corner of the world, to the waste and remanufacturing industries that are in dire straights Rutgers Green Purchasing

  9. Each choice we make has a "cost." True cost is a combination of the economic, social and environmental costs set against the offsetting benefits associated with each choice that we make. Professional purchasers and supply chain managers who consider green criteria in the procurement process (or early in the supply chain sequence) have the power to reduce or even eliminate waste and environmental impacts as well as reduce costs. If the environmental impact can be addressed as early as possible, overall costs will ultimately be lower than pollution abatement later on. Downstream corrections are more costly in terms of many resources, including dollars, labor, technical complexity, and adverse publicity. This is what Green Purchasing is all about

  10. It requires a deeper understanding of how the Earth works, and how man's processes affect natures's delicate balance. Understanding sustainability requires an awareness of how everything we do, everything we take, everything we make and everything we waste affects nature's balance, and how our actions will ultimately affect our children and the children of all species. It takes holistic thinking to be green

  11. Green Purchasing minimizes negative environmental effects through the use of environmentally friendly products. Environmentally Preferable Purchasing or Green Purchasing refers to the procurement of products and services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. This comparison may consider raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, and maintenance or disposal of the product or service. Selected Goals: To develop and maintain a consistent ‘cradle-to-cradle’ supply chain and purchasing process which considers economic, ethical, social and environmental impacts for all contracts and purchases; where all waste should first be eliminated or avoided and where any remaining waste be considered feedstock for new product development Rutgers Green Purchasing Policy and Guidelines

(1) Reviewing contracts, bids and specifications for goods and services to ensure that, whenever possible and economical, they are amended to provide for the expanded use of products and services that contain the maximum level of post-consumer reusable or recyclable waste / or recyclable content, without significantly affecting the intended use of the product or service. (2) Work with the University Community to identify new environmentally friendly products and services as well as improvements/changes in industry standards that may impact the environment. (3) Purchasing from suppliers that provide environmentally friendly products and services or suppliers that are environmentally sensitive in their daily operations. Green Purchasing and Waste Research Supply Chain Archeology A Supply Chain Manager’s and Purchaser’s Perspective On: Understanding the History, Behavior, Movement and Business of Waste; Consumerism, Consumption and the Linking and Integrating of Solid Waste into the Supply Chain Management Process

  21. International Green Purchasing - Top(e.g. Amazon Forest Product Analysis and the Rutgers Connection) Many goods and services (including 'green' goods and services) are produced overseas. Many still come from the Amazon region and other sensitive eco-systems. This project will involve an extensive research analysis of all the goods and supplies utilized by Rutgers University and the connection to the Amazon and other eco-sensitive regions of the world. We will launch this research project with a study of all the raw materials being extracted from the Amazon and Student will work with Dr. Lyons to make any and all connections to the products being developed and shipped to the University. This research project will include an extensive study of our various suppliers as well ... including product development disclosures (which we currently require via our contracts). Since this project can be extremely broad in scope we will initially concentrate on wood and petroleum based products in order to keep the project connected to REI mission and goals. We will also evaluate any and all logistics that are involved and the climate and energy impacts that are part of producing goods and services in South America . Dr. Lyons has spent many years in South America studying the supply chain so we will utilize existing research data and information to aid the student in this research assignment.   22. Purchasing Department Intern - Develop Purchasing and Contract Management Skills. This is a formal Rutgers Cooperative Program career placement for Student. Therefore, Student will be involved with all aspects of the purchasing process as we develop RFP/Q's, negotiate contracts and mitigate disputes between the University and Suppliers. In addition, there will be a strong concentration on Supplier Development and Diversity throughout this internship. We will also use this internship to identify more emerging alternative energy and technology small businesses within the State of New Jersey and we will work with them as they develop their business plans and strategies to sustain a 'green' business in NJ through tough and challenging economic times. Part of the strategy will be for Rutgers , the County and the other 55 Universities and Colleges in the State to procure and utilize the 'green' goods and services these entrepreneurs develop and to offer training and technology support to them.
