  10. What is innovation in an academiccontext? • An innovation is utilized research basedknowledge. • Innovation is the process that leads to the utilizationof research basedknowledge. • An invention is a kind ofintellectual asset, and thus not an innovation.

Questions – Impact (external) • What kinds of impact on or results in other organisations (private, public, NGO) would we like our utilization to lead to? • What have we achieved so far? • What are we really good at? • What kind of results do we not want to see? • Examples: • ”Our innovation aims at supporting product development and new business opportunities for the large telecommunication companies.” • ”Our research results will first and foremost be utilized by small and medium sized companies wanting to improve their productivity.”

Questions – Effects (internal) • What kinds of positive effects from utilization would we like to see on our own research? • What have we achieved so far? • What are we really good at? • What kind of effects do we not want to have? • Examples: • ”We would like our research utilization to lead to closer collaboration with more stakeholders in order to be able to widen our research to new areas.” • ”Through more attention in the media we can attract many more prominent researchers.” • ”By fulfilling our innovation objectives, our research becomes more competitive and can attract more funding by more industrial collaboration.”
