  4. Ask a Question • If everyone around you was doing something they shouldn’t be, would you have the strength to say no?

  5. Fact or Statistic • There are 6.3 Million Americans who have a diagnosed phobia; 2.5% of those have a fear of confined spaces called Claustrophobia.

  6. Using a Quote • Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

  7. Tell a story • It's quiet on the prairie; the only thing Lone Shadow can hear is the beating of his heart. A few butterflies silently swoop down to rest on tall grasses that spread out as far as the eye can see. Above, a few fluffy white clouds float in an endless blue sky and a gentle breeze drifts past Lone Shadow's ear. Suddenly, there's movement in the grass ahead!

  8. Your Task: Homework • Using the different options for Attention Getters • Using your Spider web • Using your 4 idea starters for your personal narrative • Come up with an attention getter for each idea starter.

  9. Background Information • The 2nd-5th sentences in the introduction • Introduces briefly what will be discussed in body paragraphs • Does not go into great detail-keep brief (you want your readers to keep reading)

Example 1: Quote Attention Getter • Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” This quote describes exactly what I went through growing up. There were many occasions that I was told I would not succeed, especially one time in particular.

  11. Example 2: Question Attention Getter • If everyone around you was doing something they shouldn’t be, would you have the strength to say no? In my life I have had several occasions where I was the odd man out. There is one example of this that really stands out in my mind. It was a time that I felt I would not be able to make the right decision.

  12. Your Task: Homework • Using the different options for Attention Getters • Using your Spider web • Choose 2 of your best essay topics/ideas and attention getter • Come up with 2-3 sentences of Background information for each of your best topics ideas.
