  1. Unit 8. International Conference

  2. Channels of asking for information • 1. journals and magazines in your field • 2. Internet (search on computer) • 3. Writing to related organizations • 4. Personal contact

  3. Sample of the letter • Dear Dr. Brook, • I am a Ph.d student of … university. I’ve learnt from….that the Second International Conference on… will be held on the university campus, 21-22, June 2006. I am just writing a paper, which seems to coincide with the topics of the conference. I would appreciate receiving the Call for Paper, circulars, and other details of the conference.

  4. Sending a Conference Paper • 1. Study the topics carefully • main topic, subtopics, main concerns • 2. Be sure to understand all requirements. • length, format, full/abstract, • contact person • 3. Pay attention to the deadlines

  5. Deadlines • 2nd circular mailing/ July, 2006 • call for paper (abstracts) • Submission of extended September 2006 • papers (abstracts) • Final registration September 2006 • Publication of proceedings October 2006 • Symposium November 7-9, 2006

  6. About International Conference • 1. A symposium: • It is a formal meeting. • Specialists present academic speeches. • Interchange among nparticipants • Open to audience questions, comments, and reaction

  7. 2. A seminar • A group of students discuss and study a problem with a teacher. • 3. A panel discussion • A meeting at which one or more scholars address conference topics in front of all participants. • 4. A poster session • A meeting at a conference during which the participants’ papers are posted on the board to be read by those who are interested in.

  8. 5. A workshop • A discussion and demonstration of the practical work on a particular subject and people related share their knowledge and experience.

  9. Related contents • First Call • Theme of the conference • Aims of the conference • Introduction to keynote speakers • Submission of abstracts & papers • Organizers • Important Date (deadlines etc.) • Further contact person

  10. 2nd Call • Hotel accommodation • Keynote speakers • Sponsoring host • Initiators • Aims • Themes • Symposium program • Field trip

  11. Publication • Registration • Working language • Place and accommodation • Important deadlines • Organizing committee

  12. Comments on Abstract Translation • Contents • 1. What you’ve done. • 2. Methods introduced briefly • 3. Findings/discovery • 4. Conclusion

  13. Informative abstract • It gives as much important information as can be crammed into the word limit. • It also give specific information about problems , method, result, or conclusion.

  14. Descriptive abstract • It describe reports. It doesn’t give any specific information about the problem, method, result, or conclusion.

  15. Sample of Descriptive abstract • The purpose of this program is to provide generalized crack growth tracking procedures for transport bomber aircraft. A study and tests were conducted on crack growth rate characteristics, analysis schemes were developed, and tracking procedures were evaluated.

  16. Sample of informative abstract • This paper explores the history of one company and its bid for survival in the rapidly changing world of today. • It examines the plastics industry in America and the position of the company within it, detailing the growth of the company over the past 50 years and the expansion of the product range and facilities to the present time.

  17. Analysis of two translated versions • Orius sauteri (Poppius) is a predator with facultative reproductive diapause. It has 5 to 6 generations per year in Beijing. In September, most of the female adults entered diapause. The research results showed that the short photoperiod was the key factor to diapause inducement. The critcal photoperiod fell between 12:11(L:D), and the temperature affected the critical photoperiod.

  18. These factors interacted by a complex way on the determination of incidence of diapause of O.sauteri. The nymph stage was sensitive to diapause signal and the more time exposed, the higher diapauserate was. The female adults of Osauteri collection in the fall would break diapause and lay eggs under long-day and warm temperature.

  19. Steps in translating work • 1. Key words • 2. structure • 3. Logics between

  20. Tips for translating work • 1. taking a whole logically connected block into consideration. • 2. Adjusting orders of sentences according to the logic and structure • requirements. • 3. Don’t be afraid of supplementing and deducting some words while translating from Chinese into English.

  21. Examples from Students’ Work • 1. Compare the Chinese version in the handout with the its English version. • 2. Make comment on the work.

  24. 1. In order to study the differential expression of the genes related to cytoplasmic male sterility in Chinese Cabbage, a modified RNA fingerprinting technique was developed to compare the difference in the total RNA. • 2. To study the differential expression , a modified fingerprinting technique was applied to analyzing the total RNA of cytoplasmic male sterility in Chinese Cabbage.

  25. 通过---获得 • Subject: 我们 (indicated) • Verb: 获得,克隆, 测序 • Adverb/prep.: 通过 • Four stable differential fragments were amplified with primers selected from 186 random primers.

  26. 根据各差异条带的测序结果合成长引物进行验证, S47,S93所对应的差异消失, 而176, 199 长引物验证的结果与RAP-PCR相似, 序列分析表明… • After these four fragments were cloned and sequenced, specific primers were designed to validate the differential fragments. The validation showed …were false positive and …were confirmed by PRC with the specific primers. Sequence analysis revealed …
