  1. Ian page 37Acids and Bases Main Ideas1. Acids 2. Bases3. pH 4. Neutralization Reaction Objective Identify and define acids & bases using notes, video and a Gizmo Lab.

  2. 1. Taste sour, burn skin, react with carbonate (CO3), react with metals producing H2, Turns litmus paper RED 2. Acids donate/give a H+ ion in a reaction I. Acids A. Chemical and Physical Properties HClH+ + Cl- Hydrochloric Acid

  3. II. BASES / Alkaline A. Chemical and Physical Properties 1. Taste bitter, burn skin, feels slippery, Turns litmus BLUE 2. Bases accept H+ ions from another substance H+ + NH3- NH4+ Ammonia

  4. A. Strengthof acids or bases (solute)determined by the amount that dissolves. III.Acid & Base Strength • HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) = • strong acid because most all • of it dissolves • 2. NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) = strong base because most • all of it dissolves

  5. 3. pH = measures (Percent H+ ion) concentration that is equal to the strength of acids & bases. a. pH scale range 0 - 14 i. ACIDS pH = 0-6 The lower the pH # the stronger the ACID.

  6. ii. BASES / Alkaline pH = 8-14 The higher the pH # the stronger the BASE. iii. Neutral Substances pH = 7 Neutral Strongly Acidic Strongly Basic

  7. B. Acid + Base mixtures = Neutralization reaction and produces water. 1. Example Upset Stomach = Increased stomach acid Antacid= TUMS (BASE) Stomach + Tums WATER (ACID) (BASE)

  8. Hero Special AssignmentIAN pg. 36 Design a comic book hero or heroine. The name of the hero or heroine must reflect one of the major concepts from page 37. Their superpower must also relate to one of the major concepts from page 37.

  9. Write a paragraph explaining how the costume, superpower and amazing feat relate to a major concept from page 37
