Something Special (short film) • The director uses • Second person narrator (Jimmy is talking to Miles – you) • Wide angle, panoramic shots (pristine landscape) • Close ups of rocks (linking idea) • Close ups of actor’s face (emotional pain) • Mixture of diegetic (nature stream) and non diegetic sound (battle field, traditional music)

ANALYSING EFFECTIVENESS 2 • Ask, “Why did the directoruse sound effects”? • Sounds from a war scene were used to contrast the silence of the NZ landscape with the horror of a battlefield • What is the effect of using Miles as a narrator? • Dead guy talking to his friend, intimate, sad, tragic. • Did this capture the “spirit of NZ”? • Yes – serenity , beauty, safety in contrast to other places in the world.
