  4. Analogies T-P-S • An analogy is a comparison, much like a simile or metaphor. It asks you to look at two things to give the reader a better understanding. • Look at the list of Worst Analogies in your student edition. • Do you think any of these comparisons is effective? Do any of them help you make a mental picture?

Listening Comprehension • Look for figurative language, clichés and analogies! • Listen to pgs 101-108. • T-P-S • Did you note any examples of figurative language? • Is this figurative language effective? Does it help you picture what Rachel looked like? • What other example of figurative language did you note? Is it effective?

Silently read: pgs 109-118 (stop at “tickets for opening night.” • Why do you think Wallace decided to give up football for the play? • On page 116, paragraph 9, there are several examples of figurative language. Identify one and evaluate its effectiveness. (write) • In your opinion, is Parker Schmidt a good news reporter? What does a good reporter do? • How do you think Rachel really feels about Wallace? What evidence do you have to support your conclusion?
