  1. Good… The Enemy of Great Applying Jim Collin’s Good to Great to the Fraternity Chapter

  2. Six characteristics to go from good to great • First who… then What • Confront the brutal facts (yet never lose faith) • The Hedgehog Concept • A Culture of Discipline • Use Technology as an accelerator • Momentum and the “Doom Loop”

  3. Who… then What • Make sure the right people are in the chapter • Brothers with poor conduct • Brothers who cause problems • Brothers who don’t pay dues Why keep them around?

  4. Who… then What 2. Elect the Right Brothers into Leadership Positions • Don’t give positions to Juniors / Seniors just because they put in the time. • Require prospective officers to fill out applications. • Review your election / appointment process. Beware “tradition”. • Big Brothers – Are they the right mentors?

  5. Who… then What • Recruit the right brothers! • Good Chapters… • Recruit friends, classmates, from organizations… • Great Chapters… • Recruit year round – including summer (even high school), have strong initiation rate, don’t make excuses for small classes • You are not just recruiting future brothers, you are recruiting future Leaders…

  6. Level 5 Leadership • Professional Will: An unwaivering focus on doing the right thing for the long term good of their organization • Personal Humility: Selfless attitude. Takes accountability for chapter’s actions while giving credit to individual’s work

  7. Level 5 Leadership • … not the “Rock Star” • … give credit outside themselves, take personal responsibility when things go wrong • … setting their successor up for success • …building “enduring greatness” into chapter

  8. Confront the Brutal Facts(and never lose faith!)

  9. Confront the Brutal Facts(and never lose faith!) • The chapter must have unwavering faith that it can become the best while admitting it’s shortcomings • Fear can be paralyzing, Truth can be liberating.

  10. Confront the Brutal Facts(and never lose faith!) • Lead with questions, not answers • Archon won’t have all the answers. Ask chapter, alumni, international office, Greek advisors. • Engage in dialogue and debate, not coercion • Must be real debate – not a show to make brothers feel involved. • Conduct Autopsies, without blame • When things go wrong figure out why so it doesn’t happen again.

  11. Confront the Brutal Facts(and never lose faith!) • Stockdale Paradox “ You must never confuse the faith that you will prevail in the end – which you can never afford to lose – with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

  12. The Hedgehog Concept • “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.”

  13. The Hedgehog Concept • The next step in assessment after confronting the Brutal Facts • Chapter must find one thing that it is the “Best” at. • This is when the chapter decides to not just settle on being good – but be “GREAT”

  14. The Hedgehog Concept • The Three Circles • What can your chapter be successful at? • What is your chapter passionate about? • What can your chapter be the “Best” at?

  15. 3 Circles

  16. The Culture of Discipline(combined with an ethic of Entrepreneurship) • Need self-disciplined brothers. • Brothers need to be informed of what is going on around them • Brothers need to be encouraged to participate and improve.

  17. The Culture of Discipline(combined with an ethic of Entrepreneurship)

  18. Technological Accelerators • Technology is an accelerator – not an agent of change. • Good chapters use it to execute better, but it won’t save a mediocre chapter.

  19. Technological Accelerators • Don’t rely too much on technology, though. • Be sure to train new members so it doesn’t become obsolete when current brothers leave

  20. Momentum and the Flywheel

  21. The Doom Loop

  22. “If you’re doing something you care deeply about and if you believe in it, it’s impossible to imagine not trying to make it great.”
