  1. Ecology Exam Review

  2. What is an organic substance? Organic substances are made-up of living or once living material • What is the hydrosphere? All water on earth including oceans, lakes, rivers and atmosphere • What is the ultimate reason for natural selection? environment • What are fossil fuels made of? dead plant and animal remains • What is fitness? Examples? any adaptation that increase the ability of the organism to reproduce • What is an ecosystem? all living and nonliving components of the environment • What is a habitat? all necessary resources for an organism to survive • What did Charles Darwin state about humans? ALL organism come from a common ancestor

  3. According to our timeline activity, put the following in order; fish, algae, ice age, rodents, dinosaurs, amphibians Algae, fish, amphibians, dinosaurs, rodents, ice age • What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors? Biotic=living abiotic= non living • What is the difference between a population and a community? Community is a grouping of difference species in an ecosystem Population is grouping of same species in an ecosystem • List and describe the trophic levels of a food chain. producer=plants Primary consumer= herbivores (plant eaters) Secondary consumer= small predators/carnivore Tertiary consumer=larger predator/carnivore • What is transferred in a food chain? energy

  4. Why is the cattle industry so destructive? releases methane increasing global warming destroys soil and land manure runoff causes eutrophication • What is an invasive species? Examples? a non native species with no competitors or predators boa constrictors, rabbits, • What is a niche? Examples? A organisms role in an ecosystem Bees, humming bird, predators • What is a symbiotic relationship? Examples? A relationship where both organisms benefit Humming bird, sharks, coral, Nemo

  5. Define/Describe the following Vocabulary A species that has a strong influence in its community • Keystone Species: • Symbiosis: • Biosphere: • Grazer: • Browser: • Granivore: • Omnivore: • Gaia hypothesis: A relationship where both organisms benefit All Parts of the earth where living things are found Animals that feed on leafy material Ex: cows and deer Animals that feed on woody material Ex: Rabbits Animals that feed on seeds and fruit Ex: Turkeys and chickens An animals that eats both plants and animals (usually insects) The belief that Mother Earth is a living being and will combat anything that causes her harm

  6. Label the Diagram below: Biosphere Biome Ecosystem Community population individual
