  1. Do you know what Transurethral Microwave Therapy (TUMT) is? Transurethral Microwave Therapy (TUMT) is an outpatient procedure to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

  2. Signs and Symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): When the prostate becomes enlarged it presses down on the urethra and causes urinary dysfunction. Depending on the degree of enlargement, men may experience any of the following symptoms: • Abdominal straining • Irregular need to urinate • Incomplete bladder emptying • Post-urination dribble • Irritation during urination • Frequent urination

  3. What Is the Purpose of TUMT? TUMT relieves the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This procedure is not recommended for men with prostate cancer or for men who are suspected of having prostate cancer. It is an option for men who want more than medicines for treatment of their symptoms.

  4. What Does the TUMT Therapy Involves? The treatment involves inserting a special microwave urinary catheter into the hyperplastic prostatic urethra. The microwave antenna within the tube then emits microwaves to heat and destroy the surrounding prostatic tissue. The temperature becomes high enough inside the prostate to kill some of the tissue. As this part of the prostate heals, it shrinks, reducing the blockage of urine flow.

  5. Who Is Not the Right Candidate for TUMT Therapy? • TUMT may not be a treatment option if you have or have had: • A penile implant • Urethral stricture — narrowing of urethra • Radiation treatments in the pelvic area

  6. Advantages of Opting TUMT Therapy: • Single session treatment so it doesn’t require an overnight stay in the hospital. • Doesn't require local or spinal anesthesia • Lowers the risk of causing heavy bleeding
