Various Risk Factors for Cancer in Kidney

Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women. Overall, the lifetime risk for developing kidney cancer is about 1 in 63 (1.6%).

What is Kidney Cancer?

Also known as renal cell cancer, Kidney cancer is a mass that grows in the meat of the kidney. Kidney cancer is rare in people under 50 but more than a third (35%) of cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed in people aged 75.


Being obese is considered as the major risk factor for kidney cancer. A BMI score of 25 or above has been shown to increase a person's chances of developing kidney cancer. Those with a BMI score of 30 or above are at particularly high risk.


Recent reports state that smokers have a 50% increase in risk. Compared to non-smokers, people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day have more chances of developing the risks of the most common type of kidney cancer.

Kidney Disease

People undergoing long term kidney dialysis have an increased risk of developing kidney cysts and this eventually increases the risk of kidney cancer. Other inherited diseases like tuberous sclerosis, Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome or the other possible risk factors for kidney cancer.
