  2. Q: What was the key issue of the republican party platform in 1860? A: Prevent the spread of slavery into western territories.

  3. What problem did the Democrats have with their platform in 1860?

  4. Election of 1860 • Republicans hold their national convention in 1860. • Lincoln-Douglas Debates introduced Lincoln to the nation, and he is nominated for the Republicans. • Democrats are split into North and South, weakening the party. • Know-nothings and others form the Constitutional Union Party, which takes away votes from the Dems • Lincoln wins the election.

South Secedes • Lincoln wins every Northern state and NOT ONE Southern state. • Southerners feel they have lost their voice in the national government & to protect their rights they secede. • Dec. 20, 1860 South Carolina secedes, followed by Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and Texas. • These 7 form the Confederate States of America. • The president of the Confederacy is Jefferson Davis.

How did the Federal government respond to secession? • President Buchanan does NOTHING in response to the formation of the Confederacy in Dec.1860. • Senator John Crittenden of KY seeks to restore the 36’30 line in Feb.1861. This compromise fails. • The Nation waits. • What will Lincoln do when he takes office???
