  3. Partner Share • What are some important inventions we use? Why are they important? • What books, movies, or TV shows do you know that feature inventors and inventions?

  4. Let’s Talk About • Turn to page 324-325 • What do you think people thought and felt when they saw the earliest vehicles? • What are the students doing in the photo. • Inventors usually have to try different approaches before they succeed.

  5. Let’s Talk About • How does that two-wheeled vehicle compare with a car? • How do inventors inspire our imaginations?

  6. Listen: “What’s the big idea, Ben Franklin?” is about a famous American inventor. Listen for this week’s words: • Theory • Experiment • suggested

  7. Amazing Words • Theory- an explanation based on observation and reasoning • His theory is that the rat will run the maze to find the cheese. • Teach your partner this word.

  8. Amazing Words • Suggested- to offer for consideration or action • She suggested they plan a party for their mom. • Teach this word to your partner.

  9. Amazing Words • Experiment- a test under controlled conditions that is made to verify a hypothesis • The students did an experiment on erosion. Teach your partner this word.

  10. Sequence • A sequence of events is the order in which things happen. • How can readers tell the order in which events happen? • What are some clue words to look for? • Why is it important to know the order of events?

  11. Sequence • Today we are going to read about a product invented by a kid. • Let’s read the first two paragraphs. • In the second paragraph I see these sequence clues: • 1905, first, overnight, then, next morning

  12. Sequence The events took place in 1905 and happened like this: • The boy made a drink and left it outside. • Temperatures fell. • The drink froze. • The boy tasted it and liked it. Finish reading the story. As you read, please fill out the graphic organizer.

  13. Summarize • Another strategy that can help understand the sequence of events is the summarize strategy. • I can summarize and paraphrase, using my own words to tell just the main ideas in a way that maintains meaning and logical order. I’ll use clue words to reinforce the sequence of events.

  14. Summarize • When Frank was a child, he left a drink outside and it froze. He thought the frozen drink was tasty. When he grew up, he patened the idea and later sold it to a company, which then began producing the treats.

  15. Fluency • Listen as I read the first paragraph of Kid Inventor. I will adjust the tone and level of my voice to stress important words and phrases. • Ok, let’s read together the story and remember to change our tone to express important words.

  16. Vocabulary • Applauds- to show approval or praise by clapping • Everyone applauds when the magician finishes his amazing act. • Inspecting- to look at closely • I use my magnifying glass when I’m inspecting the new mold growth.

  17. Vocabulary • Fabulous- almost impossible to believe • Synonym- incredible • The red feathers on her hat looked fabulous with a dark brown background. • Browsing- to inspect something leisurely and casually • Dylan spends hours browsing in stores but rarely buys anything.

  19. Spelling -Words with Schwa The schwa is any letter other than u that makes the short u sound. • Let’s take our pretest now.

  20. Past, Present and Future • Daniel played baseball yesterday. • Past tense • He plays baseball everyday. • Present tense • We will go to Daniel’s baseball game. • Future tense

  22. Writing This week you will write a short play. A short play is a story that is acted out on stage.
