Poem • There is very little agreement as to the exact definition of a poem. • What can be agreed upon is that a poem • Is a literary composition characterized by imagination, emotion, sense impressions, and concrete language • Usually has an orderly arrangement of parts • Appears to have been written for giving pleasure

  4. “My Last Duchess”Robert Browning • Read along silently while you listen to the poem being read. • As you listen • Imagine what the action is • Imagine what sort of person the Duke must be • Imagine what sort of person the Duchess was

  5. “Dulce Et Decorum Est”Winfred Owen • Read along silently while you listen to the poem being read. • As you listen • Imagine what the action is • Imagine the emotions of the soldiers, first as they’re going for rest, then as they’re attacked • Imagine how they feel about their comrade

The Preface • Your preface should answer some of these questions about 4 or 5 of your poems. • What sort of images did the poems make you think of? • What about the theme appealed to you? • Is there anything about the poet’s life (a struggle, etc.) that you found interesting? Does the poetry reflect that?
