  27. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 3: Demonstration of deodorised poultry manure use in the bating phase at a semi-industrial level for garment and footwear products • Expected results: • 100 cattle/calf leathers tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase. • 100 sheep/goat skins leathers tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase. • Less environmental impact from the new hide bating process compared with the traditional bating phase

  28. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 4: Demonstration of deodorised poultry manure use in the bating phase at a pre-industrial level for garment and footwear products • Description: • According to the results obtained in the previous Actions, hides will be tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase by COLORTEX and INESCOP. Later these hides can be used by Italian and Spanish footwear and garment manufacturers companies to manufacture goods. Amek will provide the deodorized LHM and define its use criteria. • Finally, validations will be made that will allow the environmental validation of the process (residual water, residues, etc.). These validations will be logged in a report.

  29. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • Methods employed: • Hide tanning using new natural products bating technique at a pre-industrial level, using pilot plants. • Environmental validation of residual water, residues, etc., using internationally accepted standards. • Expected results: • 45 cattle/calf leathers tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase. • 45 sheep/goat skins leathers using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase. • Less environmental impact from the new hide bating process compared with the traditional bating phase

  30. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 5: Environmental demonstration of garment and footwear products made from hides tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase • Description: • The hides produced by COLORTEX and INESCOP will be used by the Italian and Spanish garment and footwear companies, chosen from those interested, to manufacture garment and footwear products. Immediately afterwards, a comparison will be made between the tanned hides using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase and standard tanned hides, taking into account the voluntary limits imposed by the European Eco-label for garment and footwear ecological criteria (Decision 2002/231/CE) and other chemical parameters of environmental interest (pH, etc.). To achieve this, validations of harmful substances that could be present in hides will be carried out. The validation results will be written in a report.

  31. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • Methods employed: • Validations of harmful substances in hides based on international standards. • Expected results: • 100 pairs of shoes elaborated using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase. • 10 - 15 upholstery products (sofas, armchairs or chairs) elaborated using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase • Production of more environmentally friendly footwear, that complies with the European Eco-label for garments and footwear ecological criteria

  32. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 6: Study of the demonstration about the environmental benefits from the tanning process using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase(first month) All the information gathered from earlier actions, as well as results and conclusions, will be logged in a study. To achieve this, ENEA and INESCOP will prepare reports in which the results will be contained from the environmental validations carried out in the Italian and Spanish garment and footwear companies, as well as the results of the comparison between garment and footwear products manufactured from tanned hides using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase and standard tanned hides. This study will contain photos of the footwear and garment products manufactured, and will contain samples of natural products tanned hides at a semi-industrial and pre-industrial level. Amek will provide final conclusions on the optimal use of the deodorized LHM.

  33. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 7: Quality assessment of garment and footwear production • A check will be made to verify that hides tanned using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase satisfy garment and footwear quality standards. To achieve this, physical validations (tensile strength, resistance to wear, contraction temperature, etc.) will be carried out on hides produced to manufacture garment and footwear in Italy and Spain. • These validations will be carried out in COLORTEX and INESCOP, which are equipped to carry out these types of assessments. The results will be logged in a report.

  34. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 8: Feedback on hides for garment and footwear products • ENEA will maintain meetings between the collaborating companies in the project to produce hides for footwear and garments, thus different themes involved can be identified; such as possible problems, benefits, etc., encountered whilst using deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase or from hides tanned using this method used in footwear and garment.

  35. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 9: Demonstration of technical-economic viability • This Action will foresee a deep analysis in order to prove that hides tanned deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase comply with quality standards and are economically viable.

  36. PODEBA Technical future issues for the next six months • ACTION 10: Tanning manual for the use of deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase • This Action will foresee the production of a formative manual which explains how to apply the deodorised poultry manure in the bating phase to the industrial process in tanneries.
