  15. ERGONOMICSFirst Introduced into the Scientific Literature By a Polish educator/biologist/scientist WojciechJastrzębowski in 1840

  16. What is ERGONOMICS?

  17. Ergonomics = • Ergon (Work) + • Nomos (Norms or laws)

  18. My Mentors • Dr T P Ojha, Indian Institute of Tech • Dr C W Suggs, N C State U, Bio & Ag Eng • Mr Stanley Lippert, 5th Pres of HFS • Dr Ervin Tichauer, NYU Inst of Rehab Med • Dr John Grimaldi, NYU Center for Safety • EntienneGrandjean, Switzerland

  19. My Approach • Holistic, • Systems, • Inclusive, • Commonsense

  20. Time and motion study • A businessefficiency technique combining • the Time Study work of Frederick Winslow Taylor with • the Motion Study work of Frank and LillianGilbreth • It is a major part of scientific management (Taylorism).

  21. T&M Studies • Time study standard times, • Motion study work methods. • Consider SHE implication of excessive productivity

  22. Ergonomics is Common Sense • which our grand mothers tried to inculcate in us- “excesses are bad.”

  23. Repetitive exposures to excessive stresses without proper training or rest may result in • lifting challenges, • hyper- and hypo- thermia, • hearing loss, • cumulative traumas, and • carpal tunnel syndromes.

  24. Most of the diseases are • Cumulative traumas or mini-injuries • Symptoms take longer to appear • One cell deforms or dies at a time

  25. Ergonomics improves productivity, safety and health, and the quality of life. It depends upon one’s psychosocial and physical environments • It is essential that internal bodily environment be in harmony with the external environment.

  26. Disharmony Disharmony between internal bodily stresses and external stresses Injuries, Illnesses, Environmental challenges

  27. Communication Challenges • Written • Linguistic • Verbal- accent • Non Verbal: • Speaker’s appearance & attitude • Listener’s attitude, biases, needs

  28. Ergonomics balances internal bodily environment with external physical & psychosocial environment

  29. This balance improves safety, health, and productivity in a friendly environment.

  30. Psycho-social & Physical Environments are functions of one’s • Culture & • Genetic make-up

  31. Adaptability: • has posed significant challenges to • Safety, • Health, and • Environment
