  1. Introduction to the Electronic Spreadsheet Project C&I235M Spring 2004

  2. Activities • Warm-up: Thinking about students' difficulties in linear functions. • Learning about what research has to say about students' difficulties in linear functions. • Exploring NCTM e-example 7.5 and reflecting on the activities. Also learn about the NCTM technology principles.

  3. Activities (Continued) • Creating a dynamic graph in Excel for exploring the relationships between a linear equation and its graph. • Reflecting on the role of electronic spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) with relation to the teaching and learning of linear functions.

  4. Purposes • Understanding middle and high school students' difficulties in linear functions • Exploring NCTM technology principles and e-example 7.5: Exploring Linear Functions • Building a dynamic graph in Excel for exploring the algebraic and graphic representations of linear functions • Reflecting the role of electronic spreadsheets in relation to the teaching and learning of linear functions

  5. Assignments • Assignment 1(Warm-up): Thinking about middle and high school students' difficulties in linear functions (30 points). • Assignment 2: Reflecting on NCTM technology principles and e-example 7.5: Exploring Linear Functions (30 points). • Assignment 3: Reflecting on the role of electronic spreadsheets in relation to the teaching and learning of linear functions (40 points). • Assignment 1 & 2 will be done in class. Assignment 3 is due on March 19th, 2004.
