  2. Believe it or not, it all began with a satellite. • It was 1957 when the then Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. Americans were shocked by the news. The Cold War was at its peak, and the United States and the Soviet Union considered each other enemies

  3. 1836 -- Telegraph 1858-1866 -- Transatlantic cable 1876 -- Telephone 1957 -- USSR launches Sputnik, 1962 - 1968 -- Packet-switching (PS) networks developed 1969 -- Birth of Internet 1971 -- People communicate over a network 1972 -- Computers can connect more freely and easily 1973 -- Global Networking becomes a reality 1974 -- Packets become mode of transfer 1976 -- Networking comes to many 1977 -- E-mail takes off, Internet becomes a reality 1979 -- News Groups born 1982 -- TCP/IP defines future communication 1987 • -- Commercialisation of Internet Born

  4. Sputnik • USSR launches Sputnik, first artificial earth satellite. In response, US forms the Advanced Research Projects Agency • the following year, within the Department of Defense (DoD) to establish US lead in science and technology applicable to the military

  5. THE VALUE • The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields.

  6. NUTSHELL • The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability.
