Goals for the AGM • Envisiona partnership of home, school and parish, with a focus on supporting student learning, well-being and spiritual growth • AcknowledgeParent Involvement &Parent Engagementas means to participate effectively and authentically in the CSC advisory role • Discover more about School Improvement Planning, establishing priorities, setting goals & strategiesat the school & aligning resources with learning needs • Learn more about how your CSC can: • support improvement in your school community, aligned with your SIP • write successful Parent Engagement Base Funding grants ($500.00) • write successful Parents Reaching Out (PRO) grants • Identify additional Board and community resources to assist parents in working with their children at home and school to improve student learning • UtilizeSchool, Board & LDCSC Websites for effective communication

  6. Home, School & Community Partnerships 1. The School Council has a meaningful role in supporting learning and achievement for students. 2. All students, parents and community members are engaged and welcomed, as respected and valued partners 3. The school and community build partnerships to enhance learning opportunities for students 4. Learning opportunities, resources and supports are provided to help parents support student learning, and build strong collaborative learning communities.

  7. What is a School Improvement Plan? A school improvement plan is a road map that sets out the changes a school needs to make to improve the level of student achievement, and shows how and when these changes will be made. The developing an improvement plan involves teachers, school councils, parents, and other community members working together to gather and analyseinformation about the school and its students, so that they can determine what needs to be improved in their school. As the plan is implemented, schools continue to gather this kind of data. By comparing the new data to the initial information on which the plan was based, they— and the public—can measure the success of their improvement strategies.

EQAO - Perceptual Data • The 2011 EQAO Provincial Assessment identified the following perceptual information: • I organize my ideas before I start to write: • Grade 3 Boys = 37% • Grade 3 Girls = 49% • I read by myself outside of school (never or 1-2 times per month): • Grade 3 Boys = 30% • Grade 3 Girls = 17% • I read together with a parent/guardian • (never or 1-2 times per month): • Grade 3 Boys = 56% • Grade 3 Girls = 55%

  17. EQAO - Perceptual Data • I talk every day about the reading and writing I do at school with my parent/guardian: • Grade 3 Boys = 30% • Grade 3 Girls = 41% • I like to read: • Grade 3 Boys = 44% • Grade 3 Girls = 59% • Grade 6 Boys = 43% • Grade 6 Girls = 57%

Aligning Resources to Needs Grants available to schools • Parent Engagement Base Funding - annual $500/school Successful applicants link the use of funds to SIP goals (e.g. resources to support anti-bullying, Literacy, Parent Lending Library, guest speaker) • Parents Reaching Out (PRO) grants - annual Successful applicants demonstrate parent engagement in supporting learning initiatives for students and families (e.g. Family Literacy Events)

A few tips when applying… Some tips: • CSC Chair works collaboratively with the Principal throughout the application process, linking the project to SIP goals and encouraging parent engagement in the process • Identify all costs and timelines for your project and keep records for reporting purposes • Include community partners in your project, if possible Grant funds cannot be used for: • Food and beverages at a school/parent function (e.g. Family Pizza Night) • Capital projects (e.g. technology hardware or playground equipment) • Transportation costs (bussing) to/from an event • Items supplied by the school board
