  5. OUTSIDE THE NET • Go through the Yellow Pages – look for companies and organizations in your own backyard. Most of us know the top companies by name but there are hundreds of smaller companies • Seek out trade organizations, business organizations, alumni associations, chambers of commerce • Go to networking events, job fairs, chamber meetings, church events, parties • Call leaders in industry, mentors, business contacts (even if not in your field), friends Powered by: TM

  6. PASSING THE GATEKEEPER • Call company said I would like to send in my resume whom should I address it to? When they say we are not hiring or only taking on line; say I appreciate that and I would still like to mail something to the appropriate person. • Send in cover letter and resume and in letter state day and time you will call to follow up. I will follow up on Tuesday, April 30th. Then to be sure to call that day. • When the gatekeeper asks if they are expecting your call say yes I said I would call today • Cover letter - speak to what your committed to achieving in your life Powered by: TM

  7. WORKING YOUR PLAN • Plan your day out like a full work day or during the hours you have available • Do not spend all day on the computer filling out job applications (seen people go crazy doing this) • Break up the time between computer, phone and face to face • Make goals for # of calls, # apt, # events • Do other things (in appropriate time slots) work out, take a class, volunteer, clean your garage, clean up old tax files - you will feel accomplishment each day and life will be organized when you hit the rack Powered by: TM

  8. INTERVIEWING • Practice in front of mirror • Research the companies you are looking at • Match and Mirror the person who is interviewing you; people like to hire people like themselves (so if sitting relaxed you sit relaxed, if formal be formal) • Ask questions; particularly when asked a question that may eliminate you because you don’t have that exact skill, “can I ask why you are asking that? Do you see that as critical to this job position?” Powered by: TM

  9. INTERVIEWING • Give detailed answers but keep relatively brief and say would you like me to elaborate more? • Tell them what you are committed to achieving • If you feel you did poorly on the interview, call them back even if you just leave a voice mail – state I was nervous and did not leave you with the impression I would have like so here is what I want you to know and I would be happy to come back in again • If don’t hear back, call at least one more time Powered by: TM
