  1. THE SIX ESSENTIALS OF JAINISM Aarush Garg Study Class Group D2

  2. THE PURPOSE • To Get rid of sins • To become non-violent • Helps to prevent sadness • To have a happy life • To value life and respect all beings • Every Jain should follow these essentials daily.

  3. THE ESSENTIALS • Worship of God (Deva-Puja) • Devotion towards Monks (Guru-Upasti) • Study of Scriptures (Sastra Svadhyaya) • Practice of Self-Control (Sanyam) • Penance (Tapa) • Charity (Daana) • There are many ways we can use these essentials in our daily life

  4. WORSHIP OF GOD • We bow down to the Arihantas and Siddhas with devotion and good feelings • Every soul is equal, and can attain Moksha • We don’t worship for material benefits • We worship through prayers & ceremonies. • While worshiping, we think about non-attachment, and omniscience • We can worship anywhere • We should worship by coming to the temple, and praying. We should do Pratikaman.

  5. DEVOTION TOWARDS MONKS • All monks are our Gurus • They are Acharyas, Upadhayas, and Sädhvis • We bow down to the Monks with full respect • Gurus are spiritually ahead of us, living a religious life with meditation and studying religion • They have given up all worldly attachments, and have accepted the 5 vows (Non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy, & non-possession) • We should come to the temple and think about and learn how we can become like them. • Guru Gautam Swami

  6. STUDY OF SCRIPTURES • Jains should study religious scriptures every day to gain more knowledge and find the right path • This also helps people become more kindhearted • The study of scriptures also helps improve spiritual efforts. • Children can do this by going to Päthashälä, and adults can get books from the Jain Library.

  7. PRACTICE OF SELF-CONTROL • Practicing self-control on thoughts and actions helps lead a better life • We should control diets, minimize passions, and remove bad thoughts, anger, greed, jealousy, and hatred • The main goal of life should become peace and happiness • By practicing self-control, you will gain inner satisfaction • For example, you can refrain from eating meat, being satisfied with what you have, and respect all beings • You can participate in Paryushan, and cut down on the amount of food you eat. • You can limit clothes jewellery and toys.

  8. PENANCE • We should control our desires, and set up limits • This removes bad karma, and teaches us good habits • We should perform penance every day. • There are 2 types of penance– • Internal: Using our mind, such as worshiping • External: Doing something, such as fasting • You can come to the temple to worship each day.

  9. CHARITY • Charity is giving to others, whatever it is • There are 4 types of charity— • Donation of food • Donation of medicine • Donation of books/education • Protection or freedom from fear • You should do charity with compassion and respect • You can also donate many other things, such as money. • We give charity to needy people, usually anonymously • We will feel good to improve the lives of others • Some charity you can do at the temple is donating money, or volunteering for certain things.
