  3. Mission The mission of the John B. Campbell Family and Fitness Center is to be a place for families to get fit, for children and youth to reach their potential, and for Salem County’s community to come together.

  4. Demographics ~ Salem County • Population of 66,083 • Which is a 3% increase from 2000 to 2010 • 24% of the population is under 18 • 14% of the population is over 65 • High School Graduation Rate – 86% • Only 17% have a bachelor’s degree or higher • Mean travel time to work (age of 16+) is 30mins • 11% Unemployment Rate • Median Household Income is $52,958 • 10.2% of residents live below the poverty level • Diversity Breakdown • 79% White, 14% Black, 1% Asian, & 6% Hispanic

  5. Policies and Procedures • The policies and procedures that govern the John B. Campbell Family and Fitness Center can be found in the agency’s Policy and Employee Manuals. These includes the agency’s policies on matters such as: • Employee Classification (Exempt v. Nonexempt; Part-time v. Full-time) • Terms of Employment & Termination • Personal Time Off Policies based on years of service and holiday schedule • Dress Code & Appearance Policy • Code of Conduct (non-harassment, equal employment, nondiscrimination, etc.) • Code of Ethics • Disciplinary Procedures • Most policies were pretty standard but two policies that jumped out were the use of equipment/ facilities and a lactation accommodation policy.

  6. Organizational Structure Observations: • Formal and Informal organizational structure are the same. • Weekly staff meetings keep everyone updated on programs and issues. • The center employs 30 people including full-time and part-time staff. • The formal organizational chart does not have fitness staff on it but they fall under the supervision of the Executive Director. *Above Diagram is from the Center’s Policy Manual

  7. Governance • The Center is governed by a Board of Directors. • This board is made up of volunteers whoreceive no financial compensation for their service. • Currently there are 15 members on the Center’s board. • The Executive Director reports to the Board at monthly meetings. • The staff reports to the Executive Director weekly at staff meeting (held every Monday).

  8. Funding • The Center has multiple streams of revenue supporting its various programs. • Memberships to the Fitness Center is the Center’s largest single source of funding. • The Center also receives funding from the space that it rents out to other nonprofits (i.e. Meals on Wheels, Southwest Council, and the Alternative High School) • Program funding also comes from: • United Way of Salem County • The Division of Youth & Family Services (DYFS) • Health and Wellness Foundation of Salem County • State and Federal Funding • Private and Corporate support from the community

  9. Partner Relations • Rents Space to Meals on Wheels, Southwest Council, and the Alternative High School. • Partners with the Division of Youth and Family Services, United Way, and SalemCity for program funding. • Partners with other nonprofits and churches to bring in additional programs for the residents of the county. • Partners with the YMCA because the Center does NOT have a pool and the YMCA runs the city pool. • Has strong relations with its Fitness Center members ~ high rate of renewal. • Strong corporate partnership with Mannington Mills. • Brings nonprofits, churches, government, corporations, and individuals together to partner on programs to enrich lives in Salem County.

  10. Strengths • Dedicated & Committed Staff • Strong Partnership with several nonprofits including YMCA, United Way, One Village Alliance, and others. • Committed support of their cooperate partner Mannington Mills (financial and technical). • Financial Support of the Campbell Family • Support from the City of Salem and County Government

  11. Challenges • Memberships are down due to the current economy. • Increased possibility of reduction or elimination of funding from the state and federal government. • Increasing cost for repairs, maintenance of the building and grounds. • Limited amount of space in the facility to bring in outside programs. • Many of the major firms in Salem County have their own fitness center on site for employees (PSEG & Mannington Mills)

  12. Trends • State and Federal Funding are coming with more “strings” attached. • Increasing rules and regulations for the licensed child care program. • Funding sources are increasingly looking for partnership and coalition building. • Funding sources are looking for measureable outcome not just units of service. • Facility is increasing in age and more and more repairs need to be done to maintain this property. • Memberships are decreasing because of economic concerns. More people are waiting for specials or promotional offers before renewing.

  13. My Role ~ What I do: • Observe • Ask questions • Communicate with staff about their roles, responsibly and how they prefer to be managed. • Work on fundraising, marketing and communication plans. • Understand the financial management of the organization and programs. • Program Planning ~ what type of programs do their clients want to see added and evaluate if they should implement additional programming.

  14. Thoughts, Questions, or Comments?
